Can Artex be Sucessfully Covered?
If you have a home that had a makeover in the 1970’s or even 1980’s, it’s a sure fire bet it will have artex somewhere. This was a very popular ceiling and wall covering with it swirly or spiky patterns. It was low maintenance, it could be left in it’s natural state with no paint or to ring the changes a fresh coat of paint could be applied every few years. It was also very hard-wearing, and hence the difficulty in banishing it from our modern homes.
If you have a room full of artex or just a ceiling, don’t worry, we have ways of giving you smooth walls once more with out you going through the pain and mess of trying to sand it off.
Walls – we apply a skim of fresh plaster over the artex to leave a smooth surface. Firstly, we prepare the area by ensuring it is clean, dry and remove any prominent texture peaks from the walls. We apply a bond to the walls then apply the fresh smooth plaster. This process causes minimum disruption or mess and we leave the room clean and tidy. All you have to do, is wait for the new surface to dry and then decorate in your own style.
A second option is to re-artex the artex, by applying new coats of artex in a more subtle pattern than the original. However, the deeper the original design, the more coats of artex it will take to reach the desired result.
Ceilings – We’d recommend applying new plaster board to a ceiling which is then plastered, creating a completely new smooth surface. It can be skimmed as described for walls, but boarding offers extra strength to the ceiling, additional fire and sound protection, it’s a much cleaner option and if you take into account all the prep work need to re skim, it offers good value for money.
